Teacher's Methods and Materials

On my first day of duty at SMA Muhammadiyah 2, I met my mentor, Miss Rohmatunnazilah, and I was able to conduct observation on her classes. I noticed that she is more traditional when it comes to teacher and student roles and she prefers to be in-charge of the discussion. However, she employs modern techniques such as playing videos. She also heavily emphasizes on critical thinking and high-order thinking skills, as seen in the essay question items she uses in her activities.

I also observed that while Miss Rohmatunnazilah uses Indonesian as her main language of instruction, she switches to English from time-to-time. I think this is good for two reasons: the usage of Indonesian lets the students fully comprehend the concepts being discussed, and the usage of English on the other hand helps expand their vocabulary on the language, especially in this case wherein the subject being taught itself is English.

Apart from the official textbook provided by the school, Miss Rohmatunnazilah also refers to another book about critical thinking, which she uses as a guide in formulating questions and activities that promote higher-order thinking skills. She also uses material from the internet, in particular short films and videos which she presents to the class, as mentioned earlier.

When it comes to asssessment, Miss Rohmatunnazilah often uses essay questions with items that promote the usage of higher order thinking skills, which the students answer in groups.

Miss Rohmatunnazilah provided me a copy of the English curriculum used in SMA Muhammadiyah 2, and the English teaching plan. Below are the links.

I was fortunate enough however to be allowed by Miss Rohmatunnaziilah to use any lesson plan format that I was comfortable with, so I went with the format that I had always been using. It allowed me to be more flexible and to feel more “in control” of the class. In the next page, I will be explaining the procedure of my own teaching plan.
